Mental Health First Aid training is a training program that teaches members of the public how to help a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. As with physical First Aid courses, the aim is not to teach people how to treat or diagnose mental health issues, but to learn how to provide initial support to individuals until they seek professional help, or the crisis is resolved. Having certified mental health first aiders, is something to consider for all businesses.
One in four people experience mental health issues each year, this is a very high percentage and shows that it is something that affects every business. One in six workers will experience depression, anxiety or problems relating to stress at any one time. It is crucial that mental health is given the same recognition and support as physical health; it is something that most people experience in one way or another in their lifetime.
There are many ways which businesses can look out for the mental health and wellbeing of their employees. The simplest way is to keep in regular contact and show that there is someone there for them to talk to when they need support. Also, having posters and leaflets available with support group information. Exercise is a proven way to alleviate the symptoms of some mental health problems, as well as being outside in the fresh air and eating well.
These are all things that can be promoted within the workplace, through bike to work schemes, free fruit and most importantly encouraging employees to take regular breaks. If you don’t yet have any mental health first aiders, it may be something you wish to look into in order to support your employees further.
