What led you to choose the apprentice accountant role at Nicholsons?
I was at university studying law, but it wasn’t for me, I have always had an interest in accountancy and my Grandad is an accountant so that attracted me to it too. I wanted to get the qualification through being in a workplace rather than at university.
How has the apprenticeship helped you develop your accounting skills and advance your career as an accountant?
It has been helpful because if I was just studying at university then I wouldn’t be getting the client experience and what it looks like to do the job and when I go to college, I get to see what I am learning actually applies to and how it all works.
What aspects of Nicholsons’ company culture do you find most supportive or inspiring as an apprentice?
I like that in my team there are other young professionals around me that have gone through the same route as me so they know what I am going through and how they can help. They reassure me and remind me that they have been through it too and when I am stuck on something either with work or with my studies, they know how to help me and are always happy to do so.
What do you enjoy most about working at Nicholsons, and how has this apprenticeship exceeded your expectations?
I like how friendly everyone is. From the day I had my interview everyone was really welcoming so when I got the job, I was really excited and from day one it has been such a positive environment, so it feels like I am not at work which is a really big thing for me as I am doing something I actually enjoy, and everyone supports me all the time as well.
Can you describe how the apprenticeship has helped you balance practical work experience with your academic studies?
When I am working on accounts and I have a lot on, if I am struggling, I can refer to the AAT website and to my studies for guidance if no one is available to help me in person. The leadership team also help me balance my work and college work by allowing me to catch up with AAT work during work where they can help me, which they are always offering to do, and they keep checking in with me to see how I am getting on with my course.
What advice would you give to someone considering joining the apprenticeship program at Nicholsons?
I would say 100% do it because it really helps, especially when you are new to the industry as you will learn everything you need to know, and they don’t do anything to confuse you. When I first started, I understood all the words and phrases people were using which felt really good as a new person and it helped me enjoy working here more. I would definitely recommend it to people.
